ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The elementary school welcomes students from six to ten years old over a period of 5 years. It includes classes from CP to CM2. Pupils who are not native French speakers and start at Jules Verne in playschool, reach sufficient French language skills in order to continue their education in Jules Verne’s elementary school.

Objectives and organisation

Knowledge of the French language and the first elements of mathematics are the main objectives of elementary school.

Learnings are designed by cycles that last for 2 or 3 years. This makes it possible to take into account the progressiveness of learning and the needs of the pupils in order to support them in the acquisition of the skills expected at the end of each period.

Cycle 2: foundational learning (CP, CE1, and CE2)

Apart from the focus given to French and mathematics, cycle 2 is also the starting point for learning a foreign language: English.

From CE2 onwards, English teaching is reinforced so that pupils can attain the level A2 (CEFR, Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) at the end of CM2. In addition to English lessons, physical education is taught in English 2 hours per week.

Four other subjects are introduced in cycle 2 including: discovery of the world, moral and civic education, physical and sports education, artistic education.

Cycle 3: consolidation (CM1, CM2)

In addition to cycle 3’s role in consolidating the knowledge acquired, it also ensures the best possible transition between primary school and lower secondary school.

In cycle 3, literature, history, geography and sciences gain more focus.

Reinforced teaching of English continues so that students acquire the A2 level of the CEFR at the end of the CM2. Physical education (2h) continues to be taught in English.
